Smoking Up Close

I had a couple of really long days this week so my ability to do alot of pictures went down. As a last ditch effort I took my camera to a friend’s birthday party. They do a good deal of smoking while drinking so several artistic pictures surfaced from that.

Buddy allowed me to take some pictures of his slow smoking suicide. The one below is another interesting one.

Day 5 – A Cat’s Prayer

I had to come up with another photo today. Luckily, my cats lay around about 18 hours a day so they are a rich resource for interesting pictures even if I am not an interesting photographer. My fat one was laying on the back of the couch so I pulled out my 70-200mm lens and started shooting from far away. This process allows the cat to act natural and more importantly not run away. She hates humans. I got this one that had a perfectly clear eye which I loved.

Day 2 Photos

Ok so trying a photo a day for the whole year. Amazingly enough I am still going on day 2 of 365. This morning the moon was perfectly clear so I took a couple shots and ended up with the moon and a plane.

Birds In Alaska

I went on a cruise of Alaska and I saw a ton of cool stuff. Despite all of the variety of sights some of my best pictures were of birds. Even birds you could see on any beach.

These birds were amazingly brazen and very greedy. One came down and grabbed a whole slice of pizza. Then the other attacked the first. It was animal planet on a dirty table.

This shot was by accident but I loved the contrast. The next shot is of a seagull as well but it has a very interesting angle I enjoyed.

California Beach

Some old friends and I went to go see the Tonight Show. Then next day we headed down to the beach and got some great pictures and great sunburns.

Along the way we found a cave that lead to a small area obviously covered during high tide. My ham of a friend was more than willing to pose for the pictures.

A friend of mine who is on the photographic journey as well wanted to get a head shot for his myriad of social media projects. I like this one just due to the green in the background (which in the desert is not always easy to find).

Engagement Photoshoot

A little while ago I was lucky enough to attend an engagement party for a couple at work. They always seemed like such a great couple so I offered to do their engagement photos for free (I am no professional). We talked about it and a few months later we were able to make it happen. All of us met up at the Springs Preserve (a city sponsored desert garden) and we spent a few hours just shooting them wherever they were. They were such a cute and happy couple that we had no end of fun and cute shots.

Technically, the shoot posed many issues that were unrelated to the happy couple. The lighting was tricky as the sun really enjoyed turning my cute couple into underexposed cutouts. Some shots I tried flash on but that seemed to do strange things. Luckily for me, I have a copy of lightroom that can help cover over my obvious photographic deficiencies. Overall, the shots turned out great and the experience was a blast as the couple was so sweet.

Glow Sticks

So it has been a month since I have posted. I have however taken pictures which is what is important. The other day I went to a graduation party for an old family friend. I feel really old as I have known her since she was 8 years old. As part of the festivities we set up glow in the dark cricket goals. There were many glow sticks used so as fun we had her run around with them in the dark during a long exposure.

Photographic Accident

I am no Ansel Adams but I do what I can. Since I have a tendency to some really cool shots and many not so cool ones. I have found that there is one immutable truth in my hobby, almost all of my coolest shots are totally by accident. I got this one of the bird trying to just get a close up at 300mm. The exposure was all off thanks to the sun at noon in the background.

I find that when I do something I want to do it great. This fact leads me to look for the best of the best photos and try to reproduce them to some mixed and usually disappointing results. So I am trying to take more inititive to photograph more as I really do love it. However, I have discovered I don’t lead an interesting life which means sometimes I get very random pictures like the one in this post. Just for fun I hope you enjoy.
