I now have a new super power. One that annoys the snot out of all who are around me. For the past few hours I have been learning about macro photography in a whole new way. The above shot is actually of the box in which this magnificent magnifying lens came in. Why would you want such a thing you may ask. Because everything is cooler really close up.

Now most of my photography is pretty raw on the photoshop side. I use lightroom to clean up my terrible white balance and exposure mistakes. However, I took some photos at the top of Black Mountain and thanks to Vegas the shots were hazy. Luckily for me, I have photoshop elements and the internet. I stumbled apon this article and found some interesting tricks to fix it.

I feel very accomplished as it does some fun stuff and now you can see the Las Vegas Strip in my picture However, it does some weird things as you can see in the shadows of the mountain. Brings out rocks and other contrasty objects a little funky.

So I have gotten a flash. Yes I know you are at the edge of your seat to hear about it. The flash is pretty cool. It has all of the usual abilities: TTL, manual, wireless. Additionally, it has enough power to blind you or any other poor sap who is unfortunate enough to be staring into the business end.

Overall I have not had a whole lot of direct flash usage with it. The first photo shoot was done with this flash as one of the 2 strobes and it worked swimmingly.

I have, however, discovered the entertainment that is canon flash (I have mainly been playing with natural light). Unlike my other cameras, in Apeture and Shutter modes the metering goes off the BACKGROUND. So on other cameras where the metering pulls off the subject, my canon basically pulls off the background to determine how long the shutter should stay open. This was quite a shock to me and took some adjustments. I understand the ideas more now thanks to the dbreview forums and the digital photography school forums. The camera is better at assuming you know what you are doing which is why the first few shots were completely white. Just remember kiddies that better equipment often assumes you are a better user. Don’t let your camera down.

This purchase is a first for me in terms of quality. Below is one of my favorite shots. I feel bad for my cats who have been my only recent subjects. They are less than willing. The lens is beautiful. It is also huge and heavy as hell. It does however take some beautifully clear shots.
